Our Early History

It was on a cold wintry afternoon in January 1903, several good Brethren met in the office of our worthy secretary, Brother L.A. Seitz.  At this meeting it was decided to ask the Grand Lodge of Kentucky for a dispensation.

A commission of proxy was granted to PM Henry Grant of Louisville Lodge 400 by Grand Master John Landrum; to institute Shibboleth Lodge UD on February 4, 1903.

The first meeting under the direction of Brother Grant was held in Fisher's Hall, 1706 Baxter Ave., Tuesday evening, March 10, 1903 at 8pm.  At this meeting the dispensation of the Grand Lodge was read and the following Officers were selected and set to work:

Harry R Kendall - Master                        Jacob Shrader - Senior Warden                 Ed Kilgore - Junior Warden

L.A. Seitz - Secretary                             Peter McMahon - Treasurer                       John Brunk - Senior Deacon

Hugh Nevin - Junior Deacon                   W.D. Schubel - Senior Steward                 Jesse Mann - Junior Steward

 J.J. Fields - Tyler

Other Charter Members include: John Godbey, John Comley, Roy Hardesty, Thomas Hays, and W.M. Stith.

The first work for the new officers was to confer the first degree upon James Benners, Geo. Pope, Chas. Pomeroy, Richard Wyatt, and Edward Kaufman.

Our first Lodge of Sorrow was called February 5, 1906 when one of our charter members Jesse Mann was called to the celestial Lodge above.

The Lodge occupied Fisher's Hall until Tuesday October 8, 1912, when it's meeting place was moved to 919 Baxter Ave.  The lodge then later moved to the Scottish Rite and then to the Jeffersontown Lodge before moving into our current home on Fegenbush Lane in 1973.

As the lodge approached the 50th year of our existence much discussion prevailed as to what might be done to commemorate an event of which no other lodge could boast - that the Founder and the First Master was still with us at the end of the first half-century.  So in testimonial of the many years of service - for his guidance in our affairs - his generosity on behalf of our homes and other enterprises the lodge did move by unanimous vote to change its name to Harry R. Kendall No.750, where upon Grand Lodge approval was sought and granted without dissenting voice.
